PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Philip was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1975. He is also admitted in New South wales and Tasmania.

Philip has always practised primarily in Family Law and now accepts briefs in Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania. Philip is a registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner and a qualified Family Law Arbitrator and approved as a Mediator under the NMAS scheme.

Philip has served both the profession and the cause of law reform during his career.

Philip was a member of the Family Law Council subcommittees appointed to report on Arbitration and Mediation in Family Law. Recommendations in the reports were used as the basis to amend the Family Law Act to include arbitration and mediation in the Act.

He is a member of the Federal Litigation Section ADR Committee and was a member of the inaugural National Alternative Dispute Resolution Advisory Council.

Between 2008 and 2015 Philip lectured at the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course in Family Law. He is an accredited ICL in Tasmania and approved as counsel to represent ICL’s in New South Wales.

Philip is an Honorary Life Member of FLS and in 2016 the Law Society of Tasmania recognised him as Lawyer of the Year for service to the profession for work in dispute resolution.

Philip practises as a barrister, Family Law Arbitrator, mediator and Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.s.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ADMISSIONS

1971 Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of New England
1975 Admitted as a Barrister in Queensland and signed the High Court Roll.
1976 Admitted as a Barrister in New South Wales.
1986 Admitted again as a Barrister in Queensland after practicing as a solicitor for five years.
2002 Awarded Master of Laws (Dispute Resolution) from Bond University.
Philip is also qualified to practice as a:
Registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner;
A Family Law Arbitrator; and
A Mediator accredited under the NMAS scheme

EXPERIENCE

In his forty-five years of practise Philip has had extensive experience appearing in the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court. He has appeared both at first instance and before the Full Court.

He has been mediating both property and parenting cases since 1988. These days his practise includes court appearances, arbitrating and mediating primarily in Hobart and regional and rural areas of Tasmania, New South Wales and southern Queensland.
